In our Meet the Maker series, we take you on a journey to meet up with many of the artisans that are creating fine works of art in Chiang Mai, all hand crafted. In this episode we will see some of their work displayed here. There is a wood carving village in Chiang Mai where all the carvers from this community learned how to carry on the heritage and tradition created by their ancestors. This village has become more and more popular among the wholesale buyers from all around the world due to their intricate wood carving skills, passed down for generations. This wholesale market features many different kinds of sculpting such as animal figurines, statues of the world’s well-known persons, religious statues and the carvings of scenic and nature themes, all from teak wood. And yes you guessed it! The best sellers are carved teak elephants. You can see here some of them can be used as wall art and some can be displayed as floor stand décor pieces. Towards the middle of the video, pay special attention to old rice mortars that have now been hand carved into fine artistic pieces of mastery and craftsmanship for home decor. And towards the end of the video, you can see carvings from what used to be old wooden fences. Outstandingly creative indeed! Many of them are carved from entirely one piece of wood or log, thus bringing great value to the consumer market. Either large or small, contemporary or intricate, they are all available here for business orders.
