In this Meet the Maker series, we introduce you to our very own “Auntie Amporn”, as we all call her. The owner of this wood carving workshop explains about how she started her business, what kind of wooden handicrafts are selling well, and how to properly clean wooden items. Her origins is a remarkable story. Since her childhood days many decades ago, Amporn’s father was a master carver of teak wood. So she always had the opportunity to observe what he was doing, to experiment with the carving tools, and became familiar with the entire carving process. Over time, her father passed down to her all the secrets of the trade which sparked her interest and started her own carving business over fifteen years ago.
Now her main manufacturing site is carving many different types of animal figurines such as elephants, horses, stags, and owls. Of course, the elephant carvings are the best-selling. She also specializes in carved wall panels of elephants, horses, and various scenery, including epic moments in the story of the Ramayana. Religious figures such as Lord Buddha and Lord Ganesha are also prominent among her work. Functional pieces such as inexpensive teakwood trays are also a big hit. As for cleaning these teak wood products, they are able to be washed with water whenever necessary because the characteristic of teak wood is not absorbing moisture into its wood. Hope this interview helps you understand a glimpse of how the local people were inspired to start their lifelong journey in the wood carving business.
