In this episode Part 3, the maker, Mr. Noi is explaining and demonstrating to us in more detail the glassblowing manufacturing process, how he and his wife are making the blown glass animals. He has a small place for the production at his own house. During daytime, both are making more products which they could wholesale to their worldwide international buyers, and also sell during night-time at the Chiang Mai Walking Street Market.
As for the production process, first of all, one of the most important equipment for making these products is to wear a special pair of glasses as it helps you screen the flame, and as you are looking through the glass, you can’t see the orange or yellow part of the flame but can see directly through to the center of the flame which will be easier for controlling your hands. The heat of the flame when glass blowing is around 1,200 Celcius. Here, Mr. Noi is showing to us an actual production of an elephant. After the body of the elephant is completed, the four legs and other details will be followed. The process looks easy, but the reality is far from it! The artisan who creates these figurines needs to have mastery expertise in the field of glass blowing, requires creativity and craftsmanship, must be familiar with the shape and details of each animal being worked on, and must have tolerance to the heat. The most challenging part is that the point of connection between two glass pieces must be exact, so the figure takes correct shape. That means accuracy is another necessary skill required for the manufacturing process of glass blowing. Hope you enjoyed seeing all his works of art of blown glass animals and jewelry, where he makes them right here in Chiang Mai, Thailand with pride and joy for his wholesale and export business operation.
